The British Standards Institution

The British Standards Institution, the UK's national standards body since 1901, develops standards and provides certification, training and consulting services to organisations in 193 countries.

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the United Kingdom's national standards body and a business improvement company. Founded in 1901 as the world's first national standards body, it develops national and international standards and provides certification, training and consulting services designed to help organisations embed recognised practices into their operations. Its work spans quality assurance, product safety and reliability, artificial intelligence trust and governance, and sustainability and climate.

BSI's services are built around four lines of activity: standards development; certification of organisations against those standards; training to build internal capability; and consulting on improvement and risk. The Kitemark, a certification mark introduced in 1903, is a globally recognised symbol of quality, safety and reliability. These activities are relevant to regulated product sectors, where certification to published standards forms part of demonstrating conformity and safety.

The organisation employs a global expert community of 15,000 and is supported by 12,200 committee members. It serves more than 77,500 clients across 193 countries, touching over 128,000 sites worldwide, from high-profile brands to local businesses. Its stated purpose is to inspire trust for a more resilient world; it supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and works on challenges including climate change and AI trust.
