Physician-led healthtech investment firm building a portfolio of minimally invasive, motion-preserving, outpatient spine care technologies, surgical training and clinical services.
KIC Ventures is a physician-led healthtech investment firm and MedTech portfolio builder working in minimally invasive, motion-preserving and outpatient spine care. The firm was formally established in 2005 and launched its dedicated healthtech investment arm in 2013. It invests across MedTech, TechMed and services, with a portfolio spanning medical devices, connected health technology, surgical training and clinical services.
Portfolio companies include AxioMed, which develops spinal medical devices and motion-preserving spine technology; NanoFuse Biologics, working in biologics for spine applications; and NANISX, within the spine and clinical services portfolio. Alongside these, KIC has developed two practice frameworks: LESS™ (Less Exposure Spine Surgery), a surgical approach for less exposure and minimally invasive spine surgery, and the REP™ principles, which set out restoring function, enabling early diagnosis and treatment, and preserving anatomy and motion.
The firm's technical work covers spine medical devices, biologics, connected health technology, interventional spine procedures, clinical research and physician education. Its stated ambition is a global transition to ambulatory spine care, with an emphasis on evidence-based, standardized care and standardized training in outpatient and ambulatory settings.
KIC was founded by orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Kingsley R. Chin, and its team brings together surgeons, engineers, researchers and investment professionals. The firm describes its origins in a first spine patent conceived in 2000 while training at Harvard Medical School.
